Brave Search is:

We aren’t in the business of harvesting your data. We don’t want it!

Brave serves the users first, not the advertising and data industries.

We aren’t like Big Tech. We will rely on anonymized contributions from the community to improve and refine Brave Search.

User choice

Soon, we will offer options for ad-free paid search and ad-supported free search.

We are working on bringing private ads to search, as we’ve done for Brave user ads.

Brave Search is also:

Through our Brave Community, users can participate not only on index building but also on alternative ranking models to ensure diversity, and to prevent outright censorship.

We will offer best in class integration between browser and search, from personalization without compromising privacy to instant results as you type.

We will add open APIs for non-commercial projects such as free Linux and other open source operating system distributions.

  • What is Brave Search?

Brave Search will be an independent, user-first, and private search engine. By integrating Brave Search into its browser, Brave will offer the first multi-platform private browser/search alternative to the Big Tech platforms. Brave Search as a Search Engine Results Page (SERP) will also be available for use in other browsers.

  • What makes Brave Search different?

Brave Search extends the same privacy guarantees Brave has made to browser users into search. This is possible because Brave Search is based on an independently built search index. Most search offerings in the market are critically dependent on Big Tech search engines under the hood. As with all of Brave’s products, Brave Search will be privacy-protecting, user-first and transparent, unlike Big Tech.

  • Is Brave Search available now? How do I use it?

We are busy integrating Brave Search into the Brave browser and will soon have updates on availability.
Please consider signing up for our waitlist to get all of our updates on Brave Search. We’re planning to invite some of our waitlist users to be early testers of Brave Search, to ensure when we make Brave Search available to everyone that it will work well, and we are excited to build something special with your feedback and guidance.

  • Do I have to use Brave Search if I use the Brave browser, or can I still choose my default search engine?

You can choose from an open list of engines. User choice is a permanent principle at Brave. Although we certainly hope you’ll give Brave Search a try when it launches, you are absolutely free to choose whichever search engine best fits your needs. Brave Search will be just one of many search engine options you’ll have. We hope to promote it as the default engine in Brave when it is ready.

  • Can I use Brave Search in browsers other than Brave?

We’re committed to making Brave Search an open alternative to everyone who would like to use it. We firmly believe search is core to the browsing experience, and should not be hidden behind walled gardens. Brave Search as a SERP will be available for use in other browsers. Additionally, since we plan to offer API access to Brave Search, it may even help power other search engines in the future.

  • Will I see Brave Ads in Brave Search? Will I be rewarded for viewing Brave Ads?

We’re currently thinking through different search experiences to offer our users. While there is a cohort of users who have long clamored for a premium ad-free search experience, others prefer a free, ad-supported model. We think offering a choice is best. Brave Ads with rewards are certainly a possibility we’re considering, when we’re ready to take on the challenges of privacy-protected search ads.
